It is often a time of elation. Parents, relatives, and friends have been waiting for the day of birth. Cards, presents, flowers and other messages flood in. The new child is looked after medically as well as possible. Our whole society loves the birth of children.
But, can you imagine a situation where a party was held to celebrate the birth, lots of people came, it was a great time BUT – when the party was over, nobody saw the child again. They were placed in the back room of the house, given some food to keep them alive, but nobody focused on them again. By being born and giving joy in the birth, they had served their purpose.
Of course, this situation is unthinkable. We believe that every child should not only have the chance for life but also to be nurtured and celebrated until they grow to maturity – and beyond.
But could it be that as the church we’ve celebrated the birth of new believers – we’ve put resources into preaching, crusades, and outreach. But, we’ve not been sure or as keen to support people on their journey to maturity. Once the euphoria of the birth is over, do we leave people to their own devices.
The New Testament is very strong on the idea of discipleship. That is the nurturing of people to full maturity. It includes new birth, but is a long-term process that leads to maturity.
I wonder how clear you are about what it means to be on a journey to maturity. And how equipped you feel to assist others on that journey.
Join us this week to explore the journey to maturity as believers. What might the next steps toward maturity be for you?.” Bible References: Colossians 1:24-29 More Messages from Mike Bullard | Download Audio Examining the steps towards discipleship to Jesus.Share a Link to this Message
